The 9th volume of “Contemporary Issues in Mediation” (CIIM) was officially launched by Minister of State, Mr Murali Pillai SC, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Transport, at SIMI’s 10th Anniversary Celebration on 8 November 2024 at Hotel Fort Canning. CIIM is a novel series with content that originates from SIMI’s annual mediation essay competition, open to tertiary students in universities, colleges or other education institutions from around the world and across all disciplines.
In his speech to introduce CIIM Volume 9, Mr Syazwan Ramli, Student Editor, highlighted that, “Contemporary Issues in Mediation is SIMI’s flagship publication and a testament to our commitment to advancing mediation through thought leadership.” He also noted that to the student authors whose works are featured in Volume 9, CIIM represents countless hours of planning, research and writing, and numerous months of editing and proofreading to prepare these essays for publication. “It is without a doubt that SIMI and all our authors are immensely proud of the work that we have done for this book, and we are excited to finally be able to share our work with you,” said Mr Syazwan.
“…this outstanding compendium of articles … explore a rich tapestry of mediation practices and topics across a variety of crucial areas … [and] is an invaluable resource for professionals, academics, and anyone interested in the transformative power of mediation (and the underlying professional skills that mediators bring) … in diverse contexts,” said Mr A. J. Jawad, Advocate and SIMI Accredited Mediator (Level 3).

The CIIM series was launched in 2016 and aims to develop greater interest in mediation among students by encouraging them to think more deeply about mediation issues and providing them with a platform to have their works published.
Professor Joel Lee, Chairman of SIMI, and Mr Marcus Lim, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the NUS Faculty of Law and Director (APAC) of Lupl, are the general editors of the CIIM series. Previous volumes have also featured mediation professionals as guest editors.
The essay competition and the publication of CIIM aligns with SIMI’s mission to promote the development of professional mediation practice through research and thought leadership. The series has found its way into the international academic publishing world through SIMI’s partnership with Singapore-based World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd.
