CIIM Volume 9
This is the ninth volume in the widely acclaimed series, "Contemporary Issues in Mediation", and was officially launched on 8 November 2024 at SIMI's 10th Anniversary Celebration event held at Hotel Fort Canning.
CIIM Volume 9 is a collection of the best entries of the 9th Singapore International Mediation Institute Annual Mediation Essay Competition.
The latest CIIM publication contains ten chapters, spanning a wide range of thought-provoking issues, each one underscoring the complex and interdisciplinary nature of mediation. The top two entries provide a taster to this!
The winning entry by Joy Tan “Mediation in Addressing Human Rights Violations in Asia”, analyses the value and role of mediation in the context of human rights violations, navigating relevant case studies from South Asian and South East Asian countries. We are also glad that CIIM Vol 9 continues to provoke thought leadership on the Singapore Convention on Mediation, with runner-up Mr Jeriel Teo's article on “The Choice of Law Issue in Article 5(1)(a) Singapore Convention” where he examines the incapacity ground for refusing enforcement of a mediated settlement agreement.
The other 8 essays illustrate how mediation intersects with other disciplines. Game theory in mediation (applied maths); managing negative emotions (psychology); addressing trauma (social work/counselling); leveraging on AI (technology). Other authors also touch on specific areas of mediation across the justice ecosystem (including legal training) - criminal cases, neighbour disputes and the value of mediation competitions in training law students in mediation. Finally, we have article providing valuable insights into mediation in Russia.
These essays are not just contributions to a publication—they invite us to rethink how we approach conflict resolution and mediation in a rapidly changing world. Once again, CIIM has demonstrated that students can contribute to the body of literature and help develop the mediation profession.
