Chern Yang is a Director at Drew & Napier LLC.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the National University of Singapore in 2004 and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2005. Since then, Chern Yang has had experience in matters spanning a wide spectrum of legal issues, including claims involving banks and financial institutions, civil commercial matters, defamation, contractual claims, landlord-tenant disputes, employment issues such as breach of fiduciary duty and duty of confidence, shareholder disputes, claims in tort such as negligence and conspiracy, and matrimonial matters.
Chern Yang has also advised clients on privacy and data protection matters arising out of the application of the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) both in Singapore and as part of a global policy. He conducts training workshops with the Singapore Academy of Law to equip Data Protection Officers and other participants with the knowledge and skills for compliance with the PDPA.
As a mediator, Chern Yang has been an accredited mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) since 2010 and has also attended advanced mediation training conducted by Harvard Law School and Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine School of Law. He is presently a Mediator with Singapore International Mediation Centre and a Principal Mediator and Fellow of the SMC. He is also accredited with the International Mediation Institute (IMI) and Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI) as an IMI Certified Mediator and a SIMI Certified Mediator respectively.
Chern Yang is part of the SMC's Adjunct Training Faculty and frequently assists SMC in its conduct of training courses on mediation and mediation-related topics in Singapore as well as in other countries such as Fiji, Brunei, Myanmar and Thailand. He is also an assessor for the accreditation of mediators at SMC and has been an international Expert Assessor for the CDRC Vienna IBA-VIAC Mediation and Negotiation Competition.
Chern Yang was awarded the State Courts Volunteer of the Year (Advocate & Solicitor) category in 2015 and is currently a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee at the Law Society of Singapore and the Society of Mediation Professionals (Singapore). He also sits as a member of the Rental Practices Working Group in helping to roll out the Fair Tenancy Framework, as well as the Cost of Doing Business Sub-committee of the SMEC, Singapore Business Federation.
The Legal 500 Asia-Pacific 2019 edition has praised Chern Yang as “a good team player” and “strategic thinker”.
